Lost Industries of Southwark Education Resources Worksheet 2 - Using Map 1a and 1b Land Use

 

Land Use

• Print out the Victorian map Map 1a and 1b and join them together to make one A3 map.

• Look at the Map carefullly finding all the various purposes areas were used for. The same area today is mainly offices, a large hospital complex, local authority housing estates, café's, pubs and shops.

• Make a list of all the industries you can find marked on the map.

• Group them in the following categories:

• Transport
  Construction
  Clothing
  Leather working
  Food and drink
  Other industrial
  Residential
  Local government, schools, churches etc.
  Health

• Colour in the map according to these categories. Choose light colours that will not cover the writing on the map

• Why do you think there were so many industries in this area?

• Discuss with your teacher what happened to them. Did they go bust? Move somewhere else? Change into something else? Did they stay where they are?
