Print out the Victorian map Map 1a and
1b and join them together to make one
A3 map.

Look at the Map carefullly finding all the various purposes
areas were used for. The same area today is mainly offices, a
large hospital complex, local authority housing estates, café's,
pubs and shops.

Make a list of all the industries you can find marked on the
map.

Group them in the following categories:

Transport
Construction
Clothing
Leather working
Food and drink
Other industrial
Residential
Local government, schools, churches etc.
Health

Colour in the map according to these categories. Choose light
colours that will not cover the writing on the map

Why do you think there were so many industries in this area?

Discuss with your teacher what happened to them. Did they go
bust? Move somewhere else? Change into something else? Did they
stay where they are?
