Look at the Operating theatre shown in this photograph and read the desciptions below. This Operating Theatre was used between 1821 and 1862 to perform operations on the female patients of St Thomas' Hospital. This was before the advent of either antiseptics of Anaesthetics! We now know a lot more about the need to keep things clean and how to keep patients comfortable.
